Free Boob Beanie Crochet Pattern

A few months back I saw this cartoon spread around facebook and thought it was hilarious!

"I'm very crafty!"  ha ha!

It's the best!  I about died laughing the first time I saw it.

If you have followed me here or on facebook for awhile you all went through my breastfeeding woes.  I had the idea that because "it's the most natural thing" that it would be easier or you know come naturally.  Breastfeeding (for me at least) is hard work in the beginning!  It's painful and awkward and you are the sole provider day and night...no help with feedings.  When I was in the hospital I never met with an LC and Sawyer seemed to be doing good with feeding.  Well I didn't know he wasn't latched on properly so by day 2 or 3 I was miserable!  The next 5 weeks were seriously a labor of love.  I desperately wanted to breastfeed and aside from the intense pain (from the damage of not latching properly) I loved it.  After a week or 2 I did meet with an LC and from then on it was just a matter of healing which takes awhile.  Well, I did really good until I went back to work and it was so hard to keep up with working, taking care of S at work, and breastfeeding while working.  Unfortunately what started as supplementing quickly escalated to Sawyer refusing me fairly quickly.  We still breastfed at night for a few more months but not much during the day :(  I was so sad and truly disappointed with myself for not trying harder and giving up.  Being bummed over being done along with the $200-$300/month for formula I grew a true hate for formula!  I will seriously have to lose nipples before I give up this time!

Wow hello sidetrack...back to the point...  I thought this was so funny and while I do use a nursing cover I am more concerned with people catching a glimpse of my muffin top and stretch marks than my nips.  I thought this hat was too fun not to figure out and share, yes that's what I said SHARE :)  Not only is it a great pro breastfeeding item it would also be good for Breast Cancer Awareness which happens to be this month!  I hope you enjoy the pattern, it is sized for a newborn-3 month old but could easily be adjusted up.  I eventually hope to carry this pattern in all sizes in my Etsy shop but have quite a few other things ahead of this and wanted to share what I have and not keep you waiting!

  1. I am a HUGE breastfeeding advocate! It was super super hard for me too. I couldn't believe how much pain I was in the first 6-9 wks, the great thing is once you get used to it and toughen up your poor nips it is SO convenient and so worth it- of course not to mention that there is NOTHING better for your baby. I think that it is awesome that you advocate for this because sadly in America most ppl have the very wrong idea about boobies and formula is used far too often. <3 Best of luck nursing your new little one. <3

  2. This is awesome! My little one is just over a year and I am still nursing before bed, it is so hard to let go knowing I won't do this with her again! I wish you the best of luck with your new little one and hope it works out for you, for as long as you choose to nurse! I love all your patterns, so thank you for sharing this one, it cracks me up, my hubby got a kick out of the cartoon as well! ;)

  3. Thanks so much. I struggled so hard to bf my first born & had to give up after 3 weeks. With second I read everything online & in books. It was still difficult, we battled thrush, which was so extremely painful, but we persevered for a year & I am so glad we did. Though she did turn out to be a daddy's girl. I think she got enough of me the first year. ;-)

  4. Thanks for the pattern! This is so great! I'm totally making one for every baby that comes into my family from now on. My mom was a lactation consultant when I was kid, and she taught breastfeeding classes at the hospital. I've never even questioned whether I'd breastfeed or not. And of course, having my mom there with me when I had my son helped me A LOT.
My son was tongue tied when he was born. He had the frenulum under his tongue clipped when he was two days old, but I had already developed blood blisters on my nipples by then. It took two or three weeks to heal, and it was soooo painful to nurse. I'm glad I did it, though. I never considered quitting, but I also don't judge those who do for whatever reasons they have. I haven't walked in their shoes or felt their nipple pain, lol.
I hope I'm able to exclusively breastfeed my twins, but realistically, I have a couple of cans of formula in the cupboard should I need them. But even if I have to supplement, I will cherish the nursing relationship with these babies, just as I did with my oldest.
    Yay for boobies!

  10. OH MY GOSH! How cute is that! Where was this when I was breastfeeding!!! I had a cover from Hooter Hiders, I know how cute is that name. But, it did get SO hot under there!

  12. Love it! If only I could learn how to crochet!

I have a 6-month-old, and my solution to keeping my belly covered is an awesome nursing top. Seriously, I don't know what I would do without my collection of Majamas tops! Or any other nursing tops I own! Love them so much. Good luck with breastfeeding your little one! It is SO worth it.

  13. WONDERFUL!! I LOVE IT!! From one breastfeeding mother to the next, I think we all know those looks you get or remarks and WHY it is the BEST thing for your little one. My 2 boys are 9 and 4 and have been the healthiest kids. I am so thankful for that and I strongly believe its from breastfeeding not to mention the bond it creates between you and your children!! We are planning to have another one in the near future and I'm going to make this!!Thanks for the pattern!

  14. Looks awesome!

The comic is one of the works of Hathor the Cowgoddess - if you have never before seen her other stuff, google it. She creates hilarious and wonderful cartoons on many topics around birth, breastfeeding and mothering.

  15. I tried to BF my 1st girl until I wound up with infections both up "top" and "down under" after only 2 weeks and so was told to quit. Now that was PAINFUL! She turned 27 today! I didn't even try with my second daughter (who is due with her first, hope your keeping score:). Went to LLL and successfully and happily BF my 3rd & 4th daughters (ages 18 & 11) each for over 2 years! I was also able to help my sister who had blood blisters (she is VERY fair) AND helped my oldest with her early problems. Really loved the cartoon and LOVED the hat!! I had a "sweet little old lady" who sat down next to me at a mall and "heard" my daughter swallowing I was fully covered and she promptly said to me "THAT should be done in the BATHROOM!" and all I could think but not say was "Do you like to EAT in the BATHROOM!"

  17. I just came across your blog and oh my! This is SO hilarious!!! I'm a nursing mom right now and that hat would be genius to make for my little girl. Especially around my in-laws! HA!

  18. I need to re-learn how to crochet! I have so many friends that are pregnant and I would LOVE to make these for them! I wish I had one back when I was nursing my son. (I didn't want to, but was convinced to give it a try, I LOVED it! We only made it 6 months and I was sad to see it go.)

  19. I wish this was done in a video, would you consider that? I am a newer crocheter and find it much easier following along that way.

    Thanks! : )

  20. So dang funny! Man, thanks for the laugh...I sure needed it. I'm so tired of worrying about offending folks when nursing in public - get over it people!

  21. Oh and one more thing...a friend of mine started a business making "modest middles." They are camis that go under nursing bras and over post baby bulge. I love mine and feel a lot more comfy nursing in public with them....Who cares if they see my boob - it's the belly fat I want to hide! http://www.modestmiddles.com/

  22. you know there are still ppl who oppose moms feeding their babies in public. I just shared your link on my fb wall and on a friend's wall who is a having a discussion about breastfeeding.

  23. Pleeeease don't beat yourself up and be disappointed in yourself for "not trying harder". You did the absolute best you could under terrible circumstances. Be proud you went as long as you did.

I'm an L&D nurse and I can tell you your effort was above and beyond what most do. You're a great mom.

  24. I am super new to crocheting and I can follow a pattern but I cannot adjust one yet. Do you know how I might make this for a 9-12 months size?? Thanks, I LOVE LOVE this hat.

  25. I love that you posted this! I am on a August 2012 birth board and one of the mom's posted an etsy shop who makes and sells these hats. I am an avid crocheter and breastfeeding in public advocate. I instantly loved it and thought, I wonder if anyone has posted the pattern for free online, so I googled it and found you! Needless to say I posted your link on my board this morning for the other moms. May I suggest to moms with sore breast issues to buy this product from "The First Years" called "Nipple Butter". I swear by it and used it after 2 weeks of sore nips, it healed them over nite and I used it religiously after that and never had another problem again. It can be put on before and after and doesn't have to be washed off because it is edible. No lanolin either. Btw... I love this hat! Great blog!

  26. Can you make this in bigger sizes for babies 6 months and older? My friend is still breast feeding and she was the one who showed me this and she wants one. Id love to make it for her but I want to be sure its big enough! If you could possibly email me a larger pattern size or tips on how to enlarge it I would GREATLY appreciate it! Email is tiffanylace13@yahoo.com. Thank you!!

  29. on round 9 do you need to chain 3? and on the nipple portion do you need to slip st?

    ReplyDelete
  30. aww.. I don't have bulky available to me nor do I have the 4$ to buy the patterns for the worsted version * sadface *

  31. Thank you so much for sharing this!! I am in midwifery school and can't wait to make these! It is awesome. Thanks for sharing what you love with everyone!

  32. Yes, I'd also like to know about whether a chain 3 shouldn't appear at the beginning of rows 9-14. And what about the possibility of needing a slip st in the nipple portion?

    ReplyDelete
  33. hi! thats my comic, it and more can be seen here: http://www.mamaiscomic.com/2011/very-crafty/

  34. Hiya! GREAT PATTERN!! I am brand new to crocheting (literally figured out single chain last night!) but I am hoping to figure out your codes, spend some time with internet videos and make some for the new babies at work. I have been asked to knit at least on of these as a promotional project, but I'm finding controlling one hook plus yarn tricky enough, never mind TWO knitting needles! My friend gave me your link and I'd just like to say THANK YOU!! :oD

  35. Hi, I have tried several times to make your pattern but for some reason I cannot see the stitches once I get finished with the nipple portion I cannot seem to get it to the areola part of the hat let alone the white portion do you have any hints or suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Fantastic!!!!! As a Child and Family Health Nurse and a Certified Breastfeeding Educator I can't thank you enough for sharing this great pattern. Also as a grandmother who is about to get 2 new grandkidlings I will be digging out the crochet hook and wool for sure!!!!! Cheers Deb, Tasmania, Australia.

  37. I learned to crochet so I could make this hat and I'm having real problems with this pattern. It either comes out way too small for a newborn or, if I add an extra round to the nipple, it becomes too big! Is it possible that you left out an instruction? Would love some help if you're willing to share more! Thanks so much!

  38. F.Y.I., I ordered the finished product from Boobiebeanies.com over two months ago and already paid for them and have never received the product. I have tried to contact her (Sara Hansen) by email and have not heard back. I am very disappointed. So if you don't crochet and were thinking about ordering one from the website I mentioned I would not recommend it.

  42. LOL! I was browsing through Ravelry thumbnails for quick hat patterns. I seen the thumbnail image for this hat. My first thought was, daaaaaaaaayum! that is one HUGE BOOB! Then I couldn't help but laugh when I realized it was the hat and laugh even harder as I thought of the reaction it would get from prudish onlookers at the park. Too fun!

  50. I'm proud to hear that you kept with it.
I had a rough time too, then by the third month, I ended up taking on the job of wet nursing two other babies 4 days a week, so that I could make a little extra $ and stay home longer with my own little one.
There were no Lactating Counselors 24+ years ago for me and my daughter, so it's nice to hear that there are some for women now...
It was The Best Part of that first year, and I wouldn't have traded that time for anything.
I was unlucky to have a very pokey eater, which then turned into very lucky, because she was the one who was the patient baby waiting to eat, while I nursed my spares...lol
I wish all of you newer moms get to enjoy those first years with your own little angels!!!!

  51. Way to go!!!! Breastfeeding is THE best! I breastfed all 3 of my children for a total of 41 months (my last child breastfed until he was 20 months) I feel blessed and privileged that I was able to experience that unbreakable bond with all 3 of my kids. I LOVE your boob beanie - it is ADORABLE, can't wait to crochet it! :)

  52. Any suggestions for making larger sizes? My (ex) Uncle/Godfather wants want...he cracks me up! I'm sure I can make the conversion, but I wasn't sure if I'd have to adjust the nipple to keep the size consistent.
